Parent Power for Schools

Parenting Resource for Schools

Parents and Schools: an integral partnership for learning

Taking an active role in a child's education and working in support of their schooling is an essential role for parents.

It is essential, therefore, that every parent is equipped with both the knowledge and the tools to fully-realise the parenting role.

Release the Power of the Parenting Resource in Your School

"I'm sure we all agree that a parent's role in their child's education can make a significant difference to the benefit a pupil derives from their formal schooling, and that it is essential for parents to work in conjunction with their child's school to fully realise the learning potential of their child."
Dr Roy J Paget

From our extensive research conducted over 20 years in schools, and with parent groups, throughout the UK, two recurring themes have arisen:

The Parenting Resource has been developed specifically to address these two concerns and to form a partnership between school, parent and pupil to ensure maximum benefit is gained from formal education. When purchased by your school, you will receive a username and password and are free to distribute this to all your parents and, should you so wish, charge them individually for this: the choice is yours!

What Does the Resource Offer Parents?

The Resource has been designed to give parents the knowledge and understanding to immerse themselves in their child's education at all levels, making an active and constructive input into their child's studies whilst gaining insight into the workings of their child's mind.

The Resource offers guidance for parents on both practical and psychological steps that can be taken to enhance their child's learning process:

In addition to providing parents with an understanding of the learning process and environment of their child, along with practical steps they can take to both enhance and become actively involved in that process, the Resource also provides a myriad of tips and insights illustrating the need for parents to assess their behaviours and attitudes towards their child and how to imbue self-esteem in their child and its direct correlation with learning ability and achievement.

All of the above are covered in the resource.

How does a child Learn?

It is a fact that we all learn in a unique way, children will learn differently to adults and each child will learn differently from another. Getting a 'window' into how their child learns is essential for parents in order to support them. It is critical to unlock their true potential.

It is also essential that parents distinguish the difference between learning and education.

If a child's 'system' responds well to the content and delivery of a subject they do well at the subject, if it responds poorly then they do poorly.

One of the primary aims of the Resource is to ensure that parents appreciate this concern and are adequately equipped with the necessary 'tools' to ensure that their child develops a suitable adept 'system' to fully integrate with their educational environment. The Resource provides parents with a full set of 'tools' from assessing their child's learning style, through to designing and implementing learning plan, to revision, preparation and sitting of exams. It shows parents how they can play a key role in this process and gives them an understanding of how their role integrates with the education and role you provide as their teacher/school to create a partnership that will be of the utmost benefit to the child's development.

Let me give you an example of this in practice.

Imagine a group of young 15-16 year old lads who are expected to get the lowest grades in their final examinations at school. When asked what they liked doing, their reply was "breaking into cars!" At this they were put to the task of breaking into my Volvo car, where all the skilled engineers at Volvo had designed one of the most complex anti-theft mechanisms on the market. The young man was sitting in my car in under 2-minutes without any damage to the car whatsoever. Ask yourself the question - "How did he learn how to do that?" If the content of his schoolwork were delivered to suit his natural learning style what would he have achieved in his life?

This example is to show how critical it is to understand how a child learns naturally. The manner in which, or system by which, a child assimilates and accomodates information differs but all children have such an ability and the Resource will give parents the information they need to identify the ways in which their child learns and design an appropriate learning plan to aid them in attaining success.

The Importance of One-to-One Coaching carried out by Parents

In the average classroom, where there are 25 students, a child will receive only a tiny fraction of individual time in one-to-one coaching as you will know. Most of the time a child will have to adapt to the delivery method used by a highly skilled teacher, but however skilled you may be you still have 25 students to look after.

Therefore, parents have a pivotal role to play in augmenting your teaching in real time they spend with their child on one-to-one coaching. Of course, in order for a parent to harmoniously augment the work of you school, they need knowledge and understanding of the formal education system: how it operates, what is involved etc. This is where the Resource can help as it provides in-depth information on the many facets of schooling and how to work in conjunction with teachers and schools to ensure a consistent approach is taken to enhance a child's learning ability.

The Resource provides the means for parents to identify their own parenting style as their parenting style will also help in the coaching process. It is the nurturing style which gives the best results.

A nurturing adult is warm, understanding and supportive. Researchers have found that a child will learn far more easily from a nurturing parent than from a harsh parent. Children who are raised by nurturing parents are also less likely to become delinquent than are children who are raised by rejecting parents.

Here are some examples of nurturing messages to give children:

We ask parents the following Questions and if they are unhappy with their answers they can click the link and have a resource at their finger tips that can guide them to answers that will help them in the future. Only the Parent can answer these and only the parent will see their answers, so we ask them to be as honest as possible.

For example, we ask such searching questions as:

  1. How often do you ask your child(ren) to tell you, in detail, about their day at school, what they did and what they achieved?
  2. How many times, in the past 12 months, have you attended the school and in particular how many parents evenings?
  3. Can you write down the subjects that your child likes and dislikes at school and why?
  4. How often do you take an interest in their homework and assignments?
  5. Is your child healthy and fit or are they overweight and are they getting the right nutrition for the learning brain?
  6. Is your child happy and is their home life happy?

We guide parents through the analysis of their answers to identify any indication at all of where they can increase their support? The Resource will help you find these answers.

"A child has unlimited potential, they have untapped genius within them if only we could unlock it!"

As neuroscientists worked on the brain they convinced themselves more and more that the above statement is without doubt correct. Your child and their brain have unlimited potential. It is the unlocking of this potential which is the problem.

One thing is certain - you as teachers cannot do this alone, together with parent's support you may be able to take some steps forward to finding the key to unlocking their true potential and therefore unlocking the genius within.

The Way all Brains Learn can be Summarised as follows:

So this is an excellent way of testing any part of a parent's action plan that they should be designing with the help of this resource. For an example of the interactive nature of the Resource for parents, see below:

In the comment section below, please write down ways that you can get your child to say and do, let me give you some ideas:

  • Always get your child to explain what they mean on a piece of paper (say & do)
  • Ask them to show you on a computer what they mean (say & do)

Asking them to tell you is the least effective way.

What method do you employ?

  • I use the telling method (Yes/No)
  • I always get them to explain (Yes/No)

How would you describe the atmosphere in which your child is growing up?

  • Happy and very positive
  • Troublesome with rows
  • Sad
  • Disjointed with few or no patterns for them to follow
  • Due to outside influences such as jobs they spend a lot of time on their own or with other people

How would you describe the relationship you have with your child?

  • Happy and loving
  • Occasionally turbulent
  • Turbulent always arguing
  • You are unhappy with your relationship

Consider the questions below:

  • How much real time did you give to the child over the last seven days (real time is when you are alone with your child and they are the centre of your attention)?
  • Was this greater or shorter than you normally spend?
  • If your child is at school how much of your real time did you give your child in educational support?
  • If you reorganised your life, how much more real time per week could you give your child?

In relation to your child's schooling:

  • Do you know for how long your child should study?
  • Do you know how to cope with learning problems? Such as:
  • Lack of concentration
    Lack of confidence
  • Do you know what the ideal study area should look like in your home?
  • Do you know what nutrients your child should have to keep their brain in top condition?
  • Do you know why relaxation is crucial to the learning brain?
  • Are you aware of the critical examinations and tests on which their performance will change their life?
  • Do you know what the weaknesses are in the subjects that your child is currently taking?

These and many more you will find the answers when they click on the Parents Resource!

If you are still not convinced that this Resource would be benneficial to your school and it's pupils, have a look at the basic mathematics of Parenting:

Mathematical Facts about Parenting

The basic mathematics are as follows:

Therefore, parents are responsible for inputting into their child's brain 7540 hours of input which is 86%, and when we realise that our brain takes in every input into every one of our five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) we then see why the job of parenting is so difficult.

So, the first step in parenting is their self-awareness, carefully examining their attitudes, beliefs and actions to see if the require changing for the benefit of their children.

This resource will help parents examine their own self-esteem.
